From Oberon

In European mythology and religion, the man in the moon became the man in the moon because he was banished there by Moses for gathering firewood on the Sabbath. Because the Christian Sabbath is SUNday, it was determined that the man would forever be denied the sun and so he was placed in the moon with his firewood (or thorn bush) and his dog.
