From ancient times through the Victorian era, it was a custom to wear jewelry made with the hair of a loved one. Most records are of keeping a lock of hair as a memento when lovers are separated. By the Victorian era, intricate brooches and wreathes were made with the hair of the dead in remembrance, a custom encouraged by Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert.
