Thales, 624 BC – 546 BC
The earth rests on a body of water. We can observe this because the earth is a dense mass and cannot float on air, but like a log it can float on water. We can also observe earthquakes which are explicable only by perhaps a ripple or a change in the tides of our cosmic ocean.
The arche or material principle from which all things derive is water. It is from water that all things come and all things return. For there has to be a foundational element from which all other things are derived. This element must necessarily be water for we can observe that the nourishment of everything is moist, and the seeds of all things have a moist nature.
From this we can deduce that all things are composed of water, and it is only difference in the rarefication of water that gives rise to the myriad things that exist on earth. Just as ice, steam and liquid seem to be distinct entities, we know that the three are simply different forms of the same element. Likewise, all things on earth are different forms of that same element, the principle of water.
